7 Closet De-Clutter Tips

1. Pare It Down!

The venerable 80-20 rule applies to our clothes closets. We wear 20% of our clothing 80% of the time, while the remaining 80% represent the freeloaders of the wardrobe clan. Impulse purchases, orphaned blouses, and the one-size-too-small brigade choke rods, hooks and drawers, squeezing the life from the wearer-friendly 20%. Resolve to pare it down! Ask yourself, does each garment in your closet pull its own weight? Only current-season clothing that both fits and flatters should be assigned that valuable closet real estate.

2. Get Motivated
Start new projects on a Monday. "It's better to get started then than on Friday because research actually shows if you wait until Friday ... you just put it off!"

3. Divide Space on Shelves
Solid shelf dividers are an easy way to create instant, inexpensive cubbies to instill a sense of order and prevent that leaning tower of sweaters. Also a good solution for storing handbags.

4. Discover Unused Space
Take advantage of odd, unused space in your closet. Chains and s-hooks are an inexpensive, easy way to store handbags, robes, hats, scarves, etc. that take advantage of otherwise unused vertical space. Remember the back of your closet door too. Use over-the-door hangers or hooks there as well.

5. Make a Quick Decision
Quickly sort into 3 piles. Do not second guess yourself, dilly dally, or sit on the fence. Here are the choices: keep, toss, or maybe. The "maybe" is only if you really really have a hard time deciding — you’ll put these in a box and store them for 6 months, getting rid of them after that time if you never needed them. The "keep" pile is for stuff you really love and actually use — if you haven’t used it for 6 months, put it in the "toss" pile.

6.
To the Car!
Don't keep your "toss pile" in the house a second longer! Immediately put a load of "to donate" items in your car for charity. Within the next couple days when you're out and about, drop it off.

7.
Make It a Standard
Do you love the uncluttered look? Well then, maintain it! Once you’ve gotten an area decluttered, make that your standard! Become more aware of clutter as it creeps up then nip it in the bud on a daily basis. Don't let your closet be the "catch all" anymore.
