Celebrate and Cherish!

Isn’t it the memories we create each day with our loved ones that really matter? Here are some ideas to capture them in unique ways so they will live on forever.

Measuring Board. Create a measuring board of all of your children’s heights. On a special day each year (such as New Year’s Day or Birthdays), create a new line for each child. You can even include Mom and Dad. Display the board somewhere in the house, such as in the family room. You could even make a family night event of painting and decorating the board before you start this tradition.

Memory Quilt. Make a quilt for each child. Add a new square for each year of their life, with some symbolic as the symbol for that year. If you choose to give them their quilts on their sixteenth birthdays, you can create a quilt with four panels across and four down. For example, you can have one patch show a baseball for the year your child started little league, or a bicycle for the year he or she learned how to ride a bike.

Handprint Kit. Purchase a clay handprint kit and create handprints of each of your children. Perhaps you could designate special ages, such as 1 year, 5 years, 10 years and 15 years.

Friendship Book. Take photos and videos of your children with their friends and start a special memory book for each child. Then when they are grown and are leaving the home, present their book to them of their childhood friendships.

Photo Traditions. Start a fun photo tradition, such as each Fall having your children dress in their favorite new school outfit and taking pictures of them in their rooms. Your kids will have fun looking back at how their hairstyles, tastes in clothing and even their room decorations change from each school year.

Memory Box. Keep a memory box for each child with key mementos. For example, you can include a baby rattle, first set of baby shoes, special school awards, lost teeth, artwork, letters and cards or other significant milestones. Then once your children leave home as an adult, present them with their own box.

Special Journaling Ideas

• Ask a special teacher to write a letter to your child.

• Circulate a birthday journal amongst family and friends at the party. Each person can write a short message to the guest of honor. Remember to get it out each year. You can also have guests write a note on a decorative banner. Fold it up and save it.

• Write a personal letter to your child.

• Write "things we love about you" on decorative slips of paper and give them to someone in a trinket box or draw-string bag.

• Encourage your children to keep a journal. Pictures count as journal entries too! Ask your child questions and write down the answers for him.

• Print out a copy of an email or Instant Message chat that you had with your friend or your parent, and paste it into your journal.

• In the center of a piece of cardstock decoratively write “ One Hundred Things I LIke”. In a graffiti-style fashion, decorate your paper with single words or short phrases that bring a smile to your face. Maybe you love the smell of maple syrup in the morning, the sound of rain on your roof or having a Friday night movie fest with your family!

Journal ideas for young children ages 6 -8.

• Write a (never-to-be-sent) letter - to your mom, your old boyfriend, your high school self, or your kids - about your life right now and your biggest hopes, fears, and wishes for the future. If you address your thoughts to another person, words may come more naturally.

• Save ticket stubs from movies, concerts, amusement parks, and plays and put them in a scrapbook or notebook, adding a short note about who you went with and what you thought about the outing.

• The next time you're on vacation, buy postcards from different towns and attractions and write your impressions on the back of each. Then, hole punch them and slip them in a binder ring for an instant travel journal.

• Cut and paste your favorite pictures from magazines into your journal.

• Record important events in history. Record important news from the day.

• Interview a family member or friend and record the interview in your journal.
