Eating Out Can Be Affordable!

• Treat eating out as a special occasion, not as a last-minute convenience.

• Trade down and find less-expensive, casual restaurants your family likes. For example, Mexican and barbecue restaurants can be half the price of the local steak house.

• Spend your money on the food, not on soft drinks or beverages that can cost $3 each.  Eat dessert at home. You can eat out twice as much for the same cost if you skip the extras.

• Visit the restaurant website to preview the menu and its prices, and see if coupons are available that you can print.  Sign up for the email newsletter to get free coupons regularly for your favorite restaurants.  See if there are special discounted nights or freebies like “Kids eat free” or senior discounts—you have to ask.

• Use sites like www.restaurant.com to buy discounted gift certificates at participating restaurants.  If you go directly to the site you’ll pay $10 for a $25 certificate.  If you use a coupon site, you can get discount coupons to pay as little as $3 or $4 per $25 certificate (CouponMom.com has the best discount available on the homepage every day).  For the best selection, shop restaurant.com deals on the 1st day of the month when they re-stock their inventory.  The best restaurants’ certificates sell out by noon on the 1st!

• Check out local coupon books, local coupon mailers and coupon books you can buy like www.entertainment.com.  At this time of year they sell at a discount, you can preview the restaurant coupons for your city’s book before you buy it, and if you register your book online you can print a monthly coupon for your restaurants.

• Do a Google search with your city’s name and “restaurant coupons” to find local websites with coupons you can print free for local restaurants.

Get Creative About Free Entertainment

• Instead of spending $50 to take the family to a movie with snacks, get first-run DVDs at Redbox kiosks at stores like Wal-Mart for $1 per night and watch it at home with your own snacks.  If you sign up for their newsletter at redbox.com you will get a code to get a free rental.

• Check out the library for free DVDs, books, magazines and CDs.

• Trade DVDs at www.swapadvd.com.  For the price of postage, you can get a new movie for one you’ve already watched.

• Trade books for the cost of postage at www.paperbackswap.com or www.bookmooch.com.

• Visit your local thrift store and buy last year’s bestsellers for $1 to $2.
Get friends together for a book-trading party—get 10 new books for your own stash.

• One of our favorite tricks is to sign up for the email newsletter at the bowling alley’s website—you get a free hour of bowling just for signing up and will be sent similar coupons frequently.  Our family saved $26 on a recent bowling outing with their coupon.

• Do a Google search whenever you are going to a museum or local attraction with the attraction name and “coupon.”  Many local websites and visitor’s bureaus have coupons you can print for popular sites.

The Cut Out Hunger program was started after Stephanie visited her local food pantry and discovered that the pantry shelves were empty and the waiting room was full. To help fill their shelves, she began teaching a few friends how to buy food with coupons for that charity in October 2000.

Today, thousands of shoppers are "cutting out hunger" across the country while saving money on their own groceries, too. You can even get your kids involved with our special "Kids Cut Out Hunger" program!
